The Redhead Cabaret: Carrot Tops (+Bottoms): Doing It For The Gingers ~ Adelaide Fringe 2019 Review

[CABARET/BURLESQUE ~ SA/VIC] Gluttony – Empire Theatre, Sat 9 Mar. We’re really not sure how to describe this show, although ‘random’ is one word that has been thrown about – and I think that it fits well. The waiting queue had its fair share of redheads, and overheard discussions were of high expectations for the flame-haired performers we were waiting to see. Sadly, not all hopes were relieved, and it’s quite possible that there were a few ‘imposters’ on the stage... but there's really only one way to truly prove that! The Redheaded Cabaret begins with a heartfelt Welcome To Country followed by Miss Lavender Pearl playfully suggesting of touch of S&M for displeasing her – disobedience will result in a spanking. There was no shortage of (female) spectators willing to ‘bend at the hip’ for five lashes from ‘Mistress’. This show promises many things in the Guide blurb, but only few were delivered; no live musicians, for example, even if the recorded music was fun and dramatic, and the acrobatic equipment could have easily been assembled back-stage and not while someone is trying to distract viewers from the on-stage construction. Sexy and strange, these Gingers seemed to be really enjoying themselves and much of the crowd had eyes riveted toward the stage – some leaning in for a closer look. Others (mostly those of us who are redheads to the core) were clearly bewildered by the peculiarity of some moments that had the potential to hit the g-spot but clearly missed. What acrobatic moments there were clearly played it safe; which is such a shame really as burlesque, in the truest sense, has always been about pushing the boundaries. Completely out of place from the rest of the show was the ‘slam poetry’ piece; a hard-hitting, heart-grabbing verse relating to bullying. It was probably the high point for us, but left others shaking their heads – wondering where it fitted in the scheme of things. The finale was just silly, really, but it was clearly fun to perform it! The Redheaded Cabaret can be likened to a high school production of Crazy Horse antics which will surely improve as the show ages and the performance tightens, but a few drinks prior – for the performers and the audience alike – will help to loosen everyone up. The potential for spectacular with this show is high… they just need to find coherence with their performance and presentation.
