Gluttony – La Petite Grande, Sat 18 Feb.
We’re greeted coming in the door by DADO, the Hunchback of Gluttony, and those all too important first impressions suggest that this is going to be a tad unusual. Here bizarre meets magic. It is offbeat, silly and entirely engaging for children and adults alike and, on occasions, different elements of the show are aimed at entertaining different parts of the audience. The best examples of this kind of humour are entirely
without words and DADO rarely needs to add any to his facial expressions and body language. There are some minor parts for audience volunteers, but ample for participation and we’re coached by DADO to proper audience behaviour, applause, claps, oohs and aahs, too much mirth.
Many of the gags are original, and certainly being presented by an endearing, idiosyncratic Hunchback is an original twist. Of course, there are poo jokes, balloon jokes and plenty more as magic happens on this stage. The balls in the mouth routine, with them popping out in a seeming endless stream and our poor performer almost choking is a crack up and Mr 5 and Ms 3’s best recollection is just what happens to the swallowed balloon and where it comes out! As to when it is appropriate to introduce children to a sense of the absurd, with DADO I’d suggest anytime.
A Frayed Knot works well, the character pulling together the various skits and tricks within the confines of this show – a very different twist for a children’s show – Highly recommended for kids and adults alike!
